Introduction Open Office is an Open Source suite of programs with features that are comparable to Microsoft Office. However, the entire package is free to download. Operating System Compatibility Open Office has versions that can be downloaded to Windows, UNIX, LINUX, and OS X based computers. Which means that regardless which operating system you use, (and maybe you use several on different computers) you can have the same productivity tools available on each machine. Fedora and most other Linux distributions include a complete suite of the Open Office software during their installation. File Compatibility Open Office reads and writes a variety of file formats, so that you can load in a Microsoft Office document and/or you can also save your document in Microsoft Office format. Background Several years ago Sun Microsystems bought StarDivision which had written Star Office for UNIX systems. Sun has since made its Star Office suite available to the Open Source community as Open Office. Sun still maintains Star Office, which has a few more features than Open Office.
